Tokyo-AP,
March 6, 2005) — Former chess king Bobby Fischer may be
running into more problems soon.
A news report in Tokyo says he might be deported to the
United States to face tax evasion charges.
Fischer is already fighting another Japanese deportation
order to the U.S. He's been held by Japanese immigration
authorities since July when he tried to board a plane to
the Philippines allegedly using an invalid U.S.
passport.
Washington has sought Fischer on charges of violating
international sanctions against the former Yugoslavia by
playing chess there in 1992.
The Japanese newspaper report says the Internal Revenue
Service is expected to seek a grand jury indictment
against Fischer and charge him with five counts of tax
evasion. If that happens, Japan would be obligated to
send him to the United States under a bilateral
extradition treaty.
